J Walk (“the app”) is a companion for Japanese interval walking. We built it as a free labor of love, and we designed it to collect as little as possible. This policy explains what the app accesses, why, and what we do (and don't) do with it.
1 · The short version
- The app uses your location only while a walk is in progress, and only on your device. It is never sent to us or to anyone else, never stored on a server, and never sold or shared.
- There are no accounts, no analytics, no advertising, and no tracking.
- The only optional payment is a tip, handled entirely by Apple or Google. We never see your card details.
- The app checks for software updates through our build service, which necessarily receives basic technical request data (like your IP address) — see section 5.
2 · Location
While a walk is running, J Walk uses your device's location for two purposes:
- Keeping interval cues firing when your screen is locked. Mobile operating systems suspend background apps within seconds. By using location updates the way a navigation app does, J Walk stays awake so it can play the audio cue at each fast/slow switch even when your phone is pocketed or locked.
- Showing your live walking distance on screen.
This processing happens entirely on your device. Your location is not transmitted off the device, is not stored after your walk, and is never sold or shared with third parties. Location access stops when the walk ends. You can revoke location permission at any time in your device settings; the app still runs, but background cues and the distance readout will be limited.
3 · Microphone
J Walk does not record audio and does not request microphone access. The app only plays the interval cues through your device's audio output.
4 · In-app purchases (tips)
J Walk offers optional one-time tips. Tips are processed by the Apple App Store or Google Play under their own terms and privacy policies. We do not receive or store your payment-card information. The store may share a purchase confirmation with us so the transaction can complete. Tips unlock nothing — they are simply a way to support the app if you'd like to.
5 · Software updates
J Walk receives occasional over-the-air updates through Expo Application Services (EAS), the platform we use to build and deliver the app. When the app checks for an update, the Expo update service receives standard technical request information — such as your device's IP address, the app version, and your device/OS type — so it can serve the correct update. This is routine infrastructure data used only to deliver updates; it is not linked to your identity, and we do not use it to profile or track you. Expo's handling of this data is governed by Expo's privacy policy.
6 · What we don't collect
We do not collect names, email addresses, contacts, device identifiers for tracking, usage analytics, or advertising data. The app has no login and no backend account system, and it does not send your walk history or location anywhere.
7 · Children's privacy
J Walk is not directed to children and does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we'll address it.
8 · Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will update the effective date above and publish the new version at the policy URL listed in our store listings. Material changes will be reflected before they take effect.
